WASHINGTON — The White House on Wednesday announced it would immediately halt all internal polling on the war in Iran, citing a need for “data hygiene” after a trio of new surveys showed public support had collapsed to historic lows. The decision came hours after the Rusted-Out Fuck-Trumpet was briefed on the numbers, according to two aides who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the president’s mood.

A Washington Post poll found only 28 percent of Americans believe the war is worth fighting. Sixty-eight percent said it is not. Among the president’s own hardcore supporters, the share who think the conflict is worth the economic cost fell from 50 percent in May to 37 percent in July, a drop the survey’s authors called “statistically catastrophic.” A separate Politico poll showed identical erosion, and Fox News’s internal data revealed a generic midterm ballot where Democrats had opened a double-digit lead.

The announcement came from the newly created Office of Strategic Sentiment Assessment. “The problem is not the mission,” said Director Mallory Finch, speaking from a podium hastily erected in the Roosevelt Room. “The problem is the measurement. When you track public opinion over time, you invite instability. Confidence is a feeling. You don’t measure a feeling. You experience it.”

Finch, whose position did not exist forty-eight hours earlier, added that the only reliable metric was “the president’s personal conviction, which remains at 100 percent.” She then directed reporters to a large monitor displaying a single line of text: “THE PEOPLE ARE WITH US. SOURCE: THE PRESIDENT.”

As a cost-saving measure, the White House polling office has been shuttered and its staff reassigned to a Strategic Sentiment Assessment Unit that will scan social media for positive emoji reactions. An internal memorandum obtained by this outlet explains that a “thumbs-up” or “American flag” icon now counts as full-throated public endorsement, while any critical response is automatically classified as a foreign bot until proven otherwise. The unit logged a 12 percent increase in favorable reactions in its first four hours of operation, a figure Finch described as “vindication.”

The president himself addressed the development only obliquely. During a brief Oval Office photo op, he told reporters the war was “doing numbers you wouldn’t believe” before turning to an aide and asking what a margin of error was. He was not told.

At the Pentagon, a spokesperson declined to comment on the polling moratorium. A junior press aide later distributed a one-sentence statement: “The Department defers to the administration’s confidence methodology.”
