A federal judge has ordered election denier Patrick Byrne to pay Hunter Biden $1.7 million for making false bribery claims and then declining to enter the courtroom where he was being sued for defamation. The judgment, entered Thursday, represents the latest legal victory for the president's son, who has now collected more than $50 million from people who accused him of crimes on television.
The trial never happened. Byrne, the former Overstock CEO, had spent months arguing the case should be dismissed. When that failed, he adopted a simpler approach: he simply did not come. The judge had already found enough evidence of actual malice—the high bar required to defame a public figure—to send the case to a jury. Byrne's absence made the jury's job easier. After a brief wait to confirm he was not stuck in traffic, the court entered a default judgment.
"It is an unconventional strategy, but one that appears to be gaining traction among a certain class of defendants," said legal analyst Marcus Webb. "If you never enter the courtroom, you can argue you were never properly served—emotionally, at least."
Byrne had claimed on various programs that Hunter Biden sought an $800 million bribe from Iran. The claim was never substantiated. In his ruling, the judge noted Byrne's repeated refusal to engage with the proceedings. "The defendant has decided that the best response to a civil suit is to treat the federal judiciary like Twitter," the court wrote. "He blocks and moves on. The law does not."

The network paid $787 million last year to settle a defamation suit with the voting-machine company. "We have a zero-tolerance policy for zero-fact speeches," said a network spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to testify, appear in court, or acknowledge that facts exist.
The Byrne judgment pushes the Biden family's defamation haul past $50 million in 2026 alone. Professor Elena Dufresne of the Institute for Accountability Studies noted the economic logic. "Every lie about the Bidens now generates a seven-figure deposit into their legal fund," she said. "At this rate, the 2028 campaign will be entirely self-funded by people who refuse to show up for their own trials."
