WASHINGTON — The Department of Homeland Security has expanded interior immigration enforcement to include gate-side apprehensions at the nation’s airports, a move officials described as a logical next step in maximizing operational presence.

Beginning this week, plainclothes ICE agents will be stationed at departure gates, baggage claims, and Hudson News kiosks as part of a program the agency calls “Enhanced Transit-Based Removal Operations.” The initiative was reportedly greenlit by Little Diaper Donnie after he saw a news segment on airport wait times and demanded immediate action.

“The airport is a natural chokepoint,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary for Interior Enforcement Mark Hadley in a briefing Tuesday. “People are already taking off their shoes and emptying their water bottles. Screening for citizenship status is the next logical layer of security. We’re just asking the questions TSA forgot to ask.”

The first public incident involved a Southwest Airlines flight attendant detained at Los Angeles International Airport while she was preparing a beverage cart for boarding. Agents cited the need to “interrupt routine movement patterns.” In Houston, a woman traveling to a funeral in Texas was arrested at the gate. Agents later explained they had reasonable suspicion that she was “mid-journey and without proper emotional clearance.” Cell phone footage of the woman sobbing while a friend shouted “say nothing” circulated widely online. Hadley issued a clarifying memo. “Crying is not grounds for exemption,” it read. “Tears do not establish legal presence.”

The memo also noted that agents are now trained to respond to bystander interference by issuing warnings under 18 U.S.C. § 111, which prohibits assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal officers. Shouting “she’s right outside” or “say nothing” may be construed as obstruction, the memo added.

In Las Vegas, an attempted arrest at Harry Reid International Airport did not go as planned. Two plainclothes ICE agents left a man partially handcuffed on the terminal floor after a group of travelers confronted them on July 13. The agents walked away. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police removed the handcuffs and notified ICE that the man had no outstanding warrants. DHS later released a statement saying agents had “demonstrated situational flexibility and an awareness of community sentiment.”

A spokesperson for the Center for Immigration Studies praised the new approach. “This is about utilizing every square foot of American soil for enforcement,” said analyst Greg Lassiter. “If you can’t feel safe at a Cinnabon, you’re more likely to self-deport. That’s just sound deterrence.”

The Transportation Security Administration declined to confirm whether its agents would now coordinate citizenship screenings. A spokesperson said TSA screens for weapons and liquids, but nationality remains “outside the scope of a standard pat-down.” A follow-up question about potential future collaboration was met with a request to submit in writing. Then a request to remove our shoes.
