WASHINGTON — The Department of Defense has officially adopted a new standard for battlefield casualties that excludes any service member who can still walk, man a post, or perform duties within 24 hours of an injury, a policy detailed Tuesday by America’s top diplomat at the United Nations.
Mike Waltz, the ambassador for the administration of Dickhead Donny, made the clarification under sharp questioning from House lawmakers about the human cost of the Iran war. Representative Ted Lieu asked Ambassador Waltz how many U.S. troops had been wounded in the conflict. Waltz replied that the number was 'over a 100, but about 70% or 90% of those have immediately returned to duty.'
The discrepancy between the ambassador’s figure and the official database count—482 wounded, according to the Defense Department’s own tracker—was not an error, Pentagon officials later explained. It was a policy choice. A quiet June directive from the Office of Casualty Metrics, titled 'Warrior Readiness Classification Update,' instructs all branches to report a service member as wounded only if their injury prevents them from resuming assigned tasks within one day.
'This modernized framework provides a truer picture of force lethality and resilience,' said Pentagon spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sarah Vickers in a statement. 'If a Marine can still fire a rifle after an attack, what we have is not a casualty. We have inspiration.' The new reporting form, a copy of which was obtained by The Rusty Trumpet, includes a checkbox asking medics to indicate whether the injured service member 'requested Motrin or other OTC analgesic.' If checked, the injury is classified as administrative.
Under the new guidelines, the official wounded count for the Iran war has been revised to 17. The old figure, officials said, was compiled using the obsolete 'total injuries' standard—a legacy metric the department scrapped in June because it 'undervalued grit.'
Democrats on the committee expressed confusion. Rep. Lieu, who had called for Waltz’s immediate resignation after the ambassador struggled to recall the latest casualty data, was later informed by committee staff that his demand could not be sustained because the ambassador’s answer was technically accurate under the revised rule. A follow-up request for clarification was referred to the Pentagon Regulatory Advisory Panel, which meets quarterly.
Waltz, defending his testimony, told reporters the new numbers reflected 'a more disciplined and honest assessment of battlefield outcomes.' He added that any wounded soldier who asks for Motrin is probably just dehydrated.
The State Department later released a statement confirming that Waltz’s testimony had been 'fully aligned with the administration’s revised human loss metrics.' A subsequent inquiry about the number of troops killed in action was redirected to a pre-recorded line that asked callers to describe their general level of concern before proceeding.
