WASHINGTON — A new Washington Post-Ipsos poll has found that the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial, recently renovated under the personal supervision of The Leather-Faced Piss Bag, enjoys the support of just 24 percent of Americans.
The survey, released Tuesday, asked respondents to rate the president’s collection of capital renovation projects. The reflecting pool drew the highest disapproval, with 76 percent viewing it unfavorably. When asked what had motivated the renovation, 63 percent said the president intended to “glorify” himself or satisfy his “vanity and ego.” Another 18 percent cited financial benefit to the president, his family, or his associates.
Administration officials described the numbers as validating. “The president sees the pool as a metaphor for American resilience,” said White House deputy press secretary Karoline Leavitt. “That 24 percent approval is actually a floor. We are very pleased with the direction of the numbers.”
The project has been troubled since its unveiling. A fast-drying polymer sealant advertised as “leak-proof for 40 years” began peeling within three months. Bright green algae bloomed in the shallow water. The pool has been drained for repairs five times in the past eighteen months. The original estimate of $2 million has climbed to $14.9 million.
The contractor awarded the no-bid renovation, an LLC that shared an office suite with a the former president-affiliated real estate firm, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May. Its core innovation—a custom shade called “American Flag Blue”—was mixed according to a color code the president reportedly chose himself during a 12-minute meeting.
Separately, a defense attorney for the man accused of vandalizing the pool argued that the ongoing repairs undermined the prosecution’s case. “They are fixing things that were never broken by my client,” he said. The attorney noted that the pool’s drain was not actually cut, but rather had been unclogged of sealant fragments.
