WASHINGTON — A routine oversight hearing descended into chaos Tuesday after Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee briefly remembered they were allowed to ask questions, startling Republicans who had grown accustomed to hourlong sessions of uninterrupted praise.
The incident occurred during testimony from several Supreme Court justices who were requesting an additional $14 million for personal security. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) used his allotted time to read aloud public statements from Little Donnie Dollhands that had previously described the Court as “fools” and “lap dogs for the radical left.”
“The minority’s decision to read the president’s own words into the record was clearly an ambush designed to undermine this body’s collegial atmosphere,” said Senator Lindsey Graham, who immediately called for a formal review of committee decorum rules. “We come here to request funding, not to be confronted with the reasons we need it.”
Multiple Republican members were seen fanning themselves with briefing packets as Reed continued. Senator Josh Hawley later described the line of questioning as “profoundly unfair” because the justices had no opportunity to fact-check the quotes, which were displayed on a large screen behind the witness table.
“You’d think after three centuries of judicial independence we could have one hearing without someone pointing out that the executive branch keeps threatening to dismantle us,” a visibly frustrated Justice Samuel Alito told reporters after the session. He clarified that he was not criticizing the former president, merely observing that the threats had lost their novelty.
The committee nonetheless proceeded to approve the security funding in a unanimous voice vote. As a compromise, members also agreed to install a new transcription system that automatically redacts any mention of the president’s name from official records, regardless of whether it appears in a question, an answer, or a formal indictment.
